Summary

Piękna i młoda doktor historii Diana Bishop studiuje alchemiczne księgi w oksfordzkiej Bibliotece Bodlejańskiej。 Jeden manuskrypt promieniuje dziwnym lśnieniem。 Brakuje mu kilku stron。 A spod pisma wyłania się niemożliwy do odczytania inny tekst。

Tymczasem Oksfordem wstrząsają tajemnicze morderstwa。 A Bibliotekę Bodlejańską zaludniają niebezpieczne czarownice, czarnoksiężnicy, demony i wampiry。 Wszyscy poszukują księgi。。。

This novel is the first book in the "All Souls Trilogy" by Deborah Harkness。It is well written, researched, and plotted。 I'm hoping that the quality of the first book carries over into the second and third。It's funny。 There's a quote from People magazine on the Amazon page for this book: "a wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter and Twilight”。 This book (to me) was far better written than any of the Twilight books (which, to be fair, were targeted at a differ This novel is the first book in the "All Souls Trilogy" by Deborah Harkness。It is well written, researched, and plotted。 I'm hoping that the quality of the first book carries over into the second and third。It's funny。 There's a quote from People magazine on the Amazon page for this book: "a wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter and Twilight”。 This book (to me) was far better written than any of the Twilight books (which, to be fair, were targeted at a different demographic)。 I thought that it was a cross between Harry Potter and Outlander。There were a number of venues in which the characters existed: Oxford (England), Sept-Tours (France - fictitious?), and Madison, WI。 The author described each of these places as if she'd spent time walking around them。There were lots of references to medieval literature (English and French)。 I'm grateful that she provided the English translation for each French phrase she used。 This includes "Ashmole 782" which, according to a post on the web (https://dornsife。usc。edu/news/stories。。。), "does existing outside of Harkness' fictional world though its whereabouts are currently unknown" and it was "。。。originally donated to the Bodleian Library at Oxford in 1858"。 This adds a touch of authenticity to this fictional work。Scents abound in this book。 The heroine, Diana, smells certain ways as does Matthew。 At the end of the book, their scents change "cinnamon and blackthorn, honeysuckle and chamomile"。Why 4 stars and not 5? The author described witches as sympathetic characters (as J。K。 Rowling did in the Harry Potter series)。 I don't know whether this is true or not。In addition, she used the word "daemon" to describe human-like creatures very differently from the common use of this term。 To be fair, demon means an evil creature while daemon is either a background process in a UNIX/LINUX-like operating system that provides a service or a "benevolent and noble spirit in Greek mythology"。 The author is probably using "daemon" in that sense to re-brand it? See the previous paragraph。 。。。more

Almost DNF'ed this book as I thought it was truly awful。 I'm not entirely sure where all the hype comes from, especially accolades in the fantasy writing community。 My theory is that the book was riding the coattails of the popularity of Twilight in the late 2000s with similar thematic elements (see: possessive vampires, forbidden love, bland AF main characters, etc。) I never thought a series would have me pining for the works of other authors, but on multiple occasions, I thought "please save m Almost DNF'ed this book as I thought it was truly awful。 I'm not entirely sure where all the hype comes from, especially accolades in the fantasy writing community。 My theory is that the book was riding the coattails of the popularity of Twilight in the late 2000s with similar thematic elements (see: possessive vampires, forbidden love, bland AF main characters, etc。) I never thought a series would have me pining for the works of other authors, but on multiple occasions, I thought "please save me Leigh Bardugo and Samantha Shannon"。 Let's just get to the gritty of why this book is so terrible:- The main character is a Mary Sue to the core。 It has been a while since I've seen such a vapid and totally forgettable character。 She started with so much potential to be an interesting, intelligent, and badass character, then just flopped over for a relationship and no further development。 Everyone else told her how to use her powers, how "special" she was, and to grow up that I lost any respect I had barely gained in the exposition。- Speaking of relationships, I felt absolutely dead inside considering the main love story。 I had no idea why they liked each other, had no understanding of their own interpersonal worlds, and generally disliked every aspect of their courtship。 How can anyone intentionally write a depressingly bland love story about a vampire and a witch?! ALSO。 What's with the possessiveness, touching of the arms/back, guiding her by the elbow。 Cringe factor is already at 1000%。- The plot。 Good lord, it was so long and so boring。 Again, I kind of need to know how Harkness was able to make a boring book about such interesting topics。 I think her true talent was in making everything from riding horses to magic to tea and wine as absolutely boring as possible。- Do you like deus ex machina? Unexplained character appearances and arcs? Random backstory details glossed over in single sentences? Hoo boy then do I have the book for you。The ONLY reason I kept reading this book and gave it two stars is because some of the worldbuilding was actually interesting including the genetic components and speciation themes。 So much potential wasted on random interludes, poorly conceived action sequences, and otherworldly yoga。 I was banging my head on the wall every single time I convinced myself to "wait and see"。 It took me almost 2 weeks to finish the last third because I was so bored and angry。 The only reason I finished this book was to literally hate review it on Goodreads。If anything, this book served as a reminder to me that anyone can write wildly popular books。 If this is the book that launched a series, then I can write a book as well。 。。。more

Plot seems good。 Unfortunately the romance seemed quick and contrived。 Not to mention the unnecessary slow sections going into minute detail - for example the pages (no exaggeration) spent describing food and what people are cooking/eating。

I。 Loved。 This。 Book。 It felt like a grown-up version of the Twilight series and a better written version of the Sookie Stackhouse series。 Down with the trope of the helpless (but somehow irresistible?) human woman who falls in love with an all-powerful guy with a supernatural edge。 Diana Bishop may start helpless, but, slowly discovers the scope of her power as a witch。 As the story progresses, we find she is not only capable of the stereotypical flight-of-the-broom, but she straight fireballed I。 Loved。 This。 Book。 It felt like a grown-up version of the Twilight series and a better written version of the Sookie Stackhouse series。 Down with the trope of the helpless (but somehow irresistible?) human woman who falls in love with an all-powerful guy with a supernatural edge。 Diana Bishop may start helpless, but, slowly discovers the scope of her power as a witch。 As the story progresses, we find she is not only capable of the stereotypical flight-of-the-broom, but she straight fireballed this lady who was trying to start something。 It。 Was。 Awesome。Of course, our love interest, Matthew de Clermont is the tall, dark, and handsome character we have come to love in these types of stories。 (Side note: I came to learn after finishing the book that there is a TV series based on the books! Can't wait to start it。。。but, I'm a little disappointed that this guy plays Matthew? This is not at all how I pictured our beloved vampire。) Lastly, the storytelling。 I have found this type of novel to follow a fairly predictable story arc: girl and boy meet, girl and boy fall in love, girl and boy vanquish evil, girl and boy live happily ever after until the next book in the series。 First two steps。。。check。 Third step of completely vanquishing the dark and the evil that want to keep them apart。。。(view spoiler)[to be continued。 WHAT?! You would think an ending that does not completely resolve the baddies we met in this story would be a complete let down。 But, somehow。。。this just felt appropriate。 The last hundred pages or so of the book are focused on the preparation for the next step in vanquishing said evil。 As they finally take that LITERAL step。。。our heroes vanish from this novel and we have to wait for the next installment。 (hide spoiler)] Everything about this story was handcrafted suspense。 I read this book near the end (3o out of 50) of the 2021 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge and this is the first time this year that I am bummed I am completing the reading challenge。。。now I have to wait to finish the other books in the challenge before I can focus on book two!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

DNF at 68% I'm not putting myself through this shit anymore。 What a horrible turn of events。 The first ten chapters of this book were fantastic。 I thought I had a new favorite on my hands。 I was very wrong。 The one thing I liked about this book was the academia aspect。 The Oxford setting with the addition of vampires, witches, and daemons was an interesting idea。 All the historical and scientific portions of this book had me gripped。 I wish this was more prevalent in the story, as it was set- DNF at 68% I'm not putting myself through this shit anymore。 What a horrible turn of events。 The first ten chapters of this book were fantastic。 I thought I had a new favorite on my hands。 I was very wrong。 The one thing I liked about this book was the academia aspect。 The Oxford setting with the addition of vampires, witches, and daemons was an interesting idea。 All the historical and scientific portions of this book had me gripped。 I wish this was more prevalent in the story, as it was set-up to be in the beginning。 But the romance。。。。。。。 Yikes。 I can't handle the cringy love declarations。 I've read some pretty strong declarations (like the whole mates thing SJM does & poppycas in From Blood and Ash), but this was the worst ever。 Also, the cringiest smut。 This made A Court of Silver Flames seem like a masterpiece。 I also did not understand when these feelings even developed。 It was so insta-love。 Matthew was toxic, sexist trash。 They literally talk about how he treats women badly cause of their gender, but he's supposed to be our "heartthrob??" Make it make sense。 He is incredibly possessive and restricting of Diana。 It just really annoyed me。 Diana is the new Bella Swan。 She was okay in scenes without Matthew, yet when she was with him, I wanted to stab her。 The plot was basically non-existent。 The little plot there is is all over the place。 The beginning set-up Ashmole 782, but now it's been completely abandoned for the Congregation。 I'm so confused。 Frankly, I don't care enough to sort it out anymore。 The pace is so incredibly slow that it lost any interest I had in this book。 I can see why some people would love this, but I fucking hated it。 。。。more

3。5 starsIn the first book of this trilogy we read about a book where witches, vampires and daemons are real, and as usual, the humans only have legends about them。 They are organised, they can identify eachother and they have some kind of government, the Congregation, where all 3 creatures are represented。 There are certain rules, that don't really make sense (and everybody agrees) but as it is with these things, they are accepted and followed。 One of them is, that creatures don't mix。 Anyways, 3。5 starsIn the first book of this trilogy we read about a book where witches, vampires and daemons are real, and as usual, the humans only have legends about them。 They are organised, they can identify eachother and they have some kind of government, the Congregation, where all 3 creatures are represented。 There are certain rules, that don't really make sense (and everybody agrees) but as it is with these things, they are accepted and followed。 One of them is, that creatures don't mix。 Anyways, our heroine, Diana, is a witch without real magic。 She's a historian and does research on alchemy in Oxford。 By mistake she manages to put her hands on a book, which was considered lost for several hundred years。 All creatures, including Matthew (a vampire), get curious about Diana。 But, as you might guess, Matthew and Diana fall in love and of course, there's the all present war coming up (as it is the rule in all fantasy books)。 That rule seems to be set in stone - or have you ever read a fantasy book where the heroine doesn't know about that she's special and has special powers, falls in love with the (supposedly) wrong guy and both are facing the consequences of their love in an upcoming war, which wouldn't have happened if she hadn't found out about the "other world"?Anyways, they embark on their journey of their forbidden love, and 。。。 yes。 Then there's time for the next book。 Would I have read it without the TV show? Probably not。 I think I must have heard about it before, but I guess I never took the time to actually look it up。 Is it entertaining? Certainly。 The wrting style is quite scolarly and quite "clinical" - neither bad nor good。 A little lengthy at times and (view spoiler)[ don't worry kids, there's absolutely no "unprotected sexy times" in this book, because Matthew wants to take his time getting to know Diana and her body。(hide spoiler)]。 If you've watched the TV show and have the feeling that you've missed something - because you've blinked at the wrong time, otherwise some parts simply make absolutely no sensethen you should read the book。 Otherwise, if you aren't bored to death with the predictability of fantasy books and need something with vampires 。。。 give it a chance。 Or don't。 I don't know what to say about this book anymore!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

I want to like this, but I can’t get past the way old fashioned gender roles are promoted through the “romance”。 I won’t be continuing this series。 It’s like a slightly more grown up Twilight, but all the problems are still there。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Come sempre, il libro è meglio della trasposizione cinematografica。 La fase d'interesse fra i due personaggi è spiegata meglio, nella serie sembrava che Matthew volesse soltanto mordere Diana e invece in lui c'era tutt'altra battaglia。La scrittura mi è piaciuta e ha saputo tenermi incollata alle pagine。 Certo, quando arriva l'altra vampira la situazione è un po' surreale。 Non si può decantare soggezione e forza di un personaggio e poi farlo crollare al primo vero scontro。 Mi è parso tanto "tutto Come sempre, il libro è meglio della trasposizione cinematografica。 La fase d'interesse fra i due personaggi è spiegata meglio, nella serie sembrava che Matthew volesse soltanto mordere Diana e invece in lui c'era tutt'altra battaglia。La scrittura mi è piaciuta e ha saputo tenermi incollata alle pagine。 Certo, quando arriva l'altra vampira la situazione è un po' surreale。 Non si può decantare soggezione e forza di un personaggio e poi farlo crollare al primo vero scontro。 Mi è parso tanto "tutto fumo e niente arrosto"。C'è un buon world building。 Tante sono le storie fantasy di questo tipo ambientate in Inghilterra, ma il misto fra modernità, misticismo e passato è stato molto interessante。 Soprattutto comprensibile, perché a volte si vuol dire tanto o si cerca di creare qualcosa di così ricco che si trasforma in un pasticcio。 。。。more
